You may have seen the first post by my new co-blogger Conservative Chick With a Bone to Pick. She's going to be the smart counterpoint to the drivel I usually write.  She's talented and I know you'll see some excellent content.

Back when I owned my own business, I could write a bunch of posts. Hell, I was the friggin boss, who was gonna stop me, right? But then I wasn't working for myself anymore and couldn't write them and writing on a cell phone five years ago wasn't nearly as easy as it is today...but I digress.

Please welcome her and feel free to comment. I know it will take a while to gain back an audience but if you read this, come back and read again tomorrow...and the next day.

The Sad Turnaround of Charles Johnson

As those who've read this site over the last seven years know, I was a huge fan of Charles Johnson's site Little Green Footballs. Charles fought the good fight and wasn't afraid to call Islamic terror what it was when a great many cowered due to fear of violence or due to fear of being called bigoted. I have to say that along with Glenn Reynolds and Tim Blair, Charles' blogging style and writing style had the biggest effect on what and how I write.

A year or two ago, Charles took a dark turn. He started writing daily about a Flemish right-wing group and equated them to Nazi's. He went so far as to accuse Robert Spencer of Jihad Watch and Pam Geller of Atlas Shrugs of supporting the group because they attended a conference where a bigwig of the Belgian group was spoke--a conference Johnson himself was invited to but declined. From there, it went downhill quickly. Johnson made it a mission--or jihad if you will--to start calling out conservatives and worse still for a blogger, banning numerous commenters from his site. It was ugly to watch his site devolve into a site that no longer commented on events of the day but became one of attacking individuals by name and tarnishing them with a wide brush. It became personal. Those commenters who were loyal to his site but who took a dissenting view were banned and some from even reading the home page of the site. That is Charles' right but it stank of solipsism and self righteousness. Also of extreme arrogance.

He once posted something and I e-mailed rebutting him. He e-mailed me back instantly and was pretty arrogant. I proved to him that he was wrong and it didn't seem to please him too much.

That's about the time I gave up on Charles. I used to have a widget at right showing his posts and linked to him often. Hell, Charles has linked to me numerous times and aside from an Instalanche from Glenn Reynolds, which I've had several times, Charles links led to probably six of the ten biggest traffic days I've ever had. He even commented here once and challenged the left wing to bring it on.

He also went on a rampage against anti-evolution believers and went straight into the ditch. Amazingly, he called them science deniers but has now become a huge advocate for global warming when it's now clear that the "hide the decline" community has destroyed what was "science".

Anyway, I went to his site the other night and it was like I was a guy who walked into a vegan convention gnawing on a turkey leg. The commenter's don't even listen to reason or facts anymore, they seemed...shell-shocked. They are loyal to their leader and anyone who says anything remotely anti-LGF is fair game. It was embarrassing for Charles and he doesn't even see it.

Just something to get off my chest and this piece about Charles in the New York Times reminded me. It goes without saying that if Charles had been a left-winger and moved to the right the Times wouldn't have published this.

This is inside baseball to those who don't follow blogs daily but something that needed to be said.

Exit question: Does anyone get the feeling that Charles went left because he thought the nation was going left and it was a good business move? If so, he was mistaken big time as this glorious week has proven.

-Moveon.org jerkoff supporter bites off pinky of 65-year old anti-socialist medicine protester. Thank goodness Obamacare hasn't passed or the old fella would have had to wait three months to get it replaced.

-Obama "Green Jobs Czar" (whatever the hell that is) is a full-blown truther who believes Bush and Cheney were behind 9/11. This has got to be the most America-hatin' administration ever.

-Some dude with no arms is denied check cashing services because he lacks thumbs to provide a thumb print.

Thursday Afternoon News & Notes

Today is about a close to feeling like a Friday as any day but a Friday can. Enjoy the Fourth, I'm headed down to Virginia for a baseball tourney with my boy.

-Saddam told the FBI that he lied about WMD to fool Iran. He also fooled Dick Cheney, George Bush, Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, John Edwards, Joe Biden...

-Some never-was on CNBC claims he received "veiled death threats" from bloggers over comments against the blogosphere. I've never heard of the guy and he doesn't show up in too many hits on Google. I guess he's going for that cool lib street cred or something. BTW, WTF is a "veiled death threat?"

-WaPo conducts fastest damage control in history after flyer's offering access to top pols for money distributed.

-US Soldier captured by Taliban after being "sold" by insurgents. The terrorists say they will release a video soon. Pray for the man.

Be Honest; Glenn Beck Creeps You Out Too

Back about five years ago, the local talk radion station replaced Imus with Glenn Beck. I gave it a shot for a week or so and went to sports talk radio then Laura Ingraham and never listened to the guy again.

I'm not sure what it is about the dude, he just isn't funny, espouses views that I find extreme, drivels on about insignificant topics and is a horrid example of what I think of as a Conservative. I don't want people like him representing what I think is a new and emerging wing of the conservative movement where we take a hard line on terror, militant Islam, illegal immigration and big government. We tend to take a more centrist line on issues that are more cultural like gay marriage, abortion and the "war on drugs".

He attacked ER-linker and one of those I reference and link to to often--Charles Johnson of LGF. Video at Charles' site if you want to see it. Beck disparages Johnson in the same smug manner that turned me off and continues to keep me from tuning in to his FoxNews show.

Granted, I've been a bit turned off by Charles of late due to his battles against Creationist's, I view it along the same lines I view the abortion debate; people are fixed in their mindset and no amount of bickering or "facts" will change their view. But Charles has been vigilant in exposing hate--whether it be white supremacism, Islamo-fascism or anti-Semitism. Beck on the other hand is one who will do anything to gain another fifteen minutes of fame...we are about three years past the time he should have been relegated to the dustbin of inane radio hosts right alongside Garofalo, Cuomo and Donahue. Why Fox gave him a show is beyond me and the fact that he draws ratings is disturbing. I'm guessing the rest of the lineup helps that considerably.

Anyway, for a national talk show host to go after a blogger who has gone decidedly centrist is beneath contempt and to be honest, is disconcerting. We are facing real issues like piracy inspired by al-Qaeda, a wretched economy and two wars. The fact that Glenn Beck felt it of importance to attack Charles Johnson shows me that he's not only one who is just not serious about pressing issues but is highly vindictive and a classic narcissist as well.

Liberals Shocked to Learn Liberals are Stingy

The reason is right in front of their faces. Look at the amount conservatives give to charity and the amount liberals do. Look at Tim Geithner and the myriad others Obama has brought in who failed to pay their taxes. The evidence is empirical that liberals hate parting with their own money--but love to spend everyone elses.

So why would they be so surprised and upset that liberal groups flush with money aren't spreading the wealth?

Some of the leading liberal bloggers are privately furious (not any more--ed) with the major progressive groups — and in some cases, the Democratic Party committees — for failing to spend money advertising on their sites, even as these groups constantly ask the bloggers for free assistance in driving their message.

I've an idea, how about you print your own opinions and stop regurgitating what the Dems tell you to. It's called have morals and being intellectually honest. I've never received a single peso from any group asking me to write about them. As for the other big bloggers, I'm reasonably sure that they have conference calls but typically make that known and then write a straight piece about what was discussed.

It’s a development that’s creating tensions on the left and raises questions about the future role of the blogosphere at a time when a Dem is in the White House and liberalism could be headed for a period of sustained ascendancy.

I'm not quite sure about that "ascendancy" thing of which you speak, Mr. Sargent. The various tea parties and the abbreviated honeymoon period seem to debunk that but I digress. The liberal blogosphere has had an impact but not as much as the socialist's at FiredogLake and Daily Kos think it has. Obama would have won with or without them and he knows it. He used you, just like he used anyone who would help him achieve his means. Hopefully he left a c-note on the nightstand for you.

“They come to us, expecting us to give them free publicity, and we do, but it’s not a two way street,” Jane Hamsher, the founder of FiredogLake, said in an interview. “They won’t do anything in return. They’re not advertising with us. They’re not offering fellowships. They’re not doing anything to help financially, and people are growing increasingly resentful.”

Hamsher is actually surprised by this? The Democrats are treating bloggers just like they've always treated blacks and other minorities; they wink at you and make you feel special and once they win the election they forget about you until the next one. Mark my words, they will come around in early 2010 and make you feel all warm and fuzzy until we get to December 2010 and they'll blow you off again.

Hamsher singled out Americans United for Change, which raises and spends big money on TV ad campaigns driving Obama’s agenda, as well as the constellation of groups associated with it, and the American Association of Retired Persons, also a big TV advertiser.

“Most want the easy way — having a big blogger promote their agenda,” adds Markos Moulitsas, the founder of DailyKos. “Then they turn around and spend $50K for a one-page ad in the New York Times or whatever.” Moulitsas adds that officials at such groups often do nothing to engage the sites’s audiences by, say, writing posts, instead wanting the bloggers to do everything for them.

The people who support AARP would take one look at the anti-Semitism and vile anti-Americanism of Hamsher's and Kos' sites and run away screaming. Why would they want to advertise there? Or Kos' site with his raging horde of commies who are vulgar and crude? The groups mentioned want to be legitimate and advertising on sites where f-bombs and a barely-concealed (and sometimes overt) hatred for American values are a daily occurrence would not be helpful.

Still, it's entertaining to listen to them complain like the whiny liberals they are. It's tough realizing you've been used like the woman who pays her boyfriend's way through med school and once he graduates he takes off with another hottie.

Six-year Blogiversary

Wow, I forgot that back on 2/22/03, I published my first post on this blog. Six years is like a millennium in blogger time and not many have lasted this long.

Aside from the period I was getting paid to write for AOL, this blog has posted nearly every day with a few weeks here and there that I was busy with other things. This is my 5,932nd post to this site or over two a day during the duration. I don't know how many hits I've had total because I didn't add Sitemeter until well into my third year.

In that time, I've been linked by blogs large--such as Instapundit--and small and for that I am thankful. Any writer, whether they be on the op/ed page of the NY Times or some scrub like me sitting in my home office wants to get the widest exposure for their work. I may not be grammatically correct all the time but I have an opinion just like anyone and getting it out there is what this whole medium is about. I may not be a "trained jounalist" either but why is my opinion worth any less than one who is?

I look to continue doing this for another six, twelve or thirty two years and will not stop for any reason I can see. The job of the press in this country and the reason we are specifically protected by the 1st Amendment is so that we can criticize our elected leaders as we see fit. The "press" is no longer what Pinch Sulzberger says it is but what you and I say it is. Our job is to watch our politicians and make them be responsible and ethical or expose them when they are not. Unfortunately, some in Congress have a differing definition of what constitutes "free speech" but we'll expose them too.

Many members of news organizations and dailies, entities once known as the "press", have fallen down on the job and bloggers have picked up the flag and marched forward. The success can be measured by the increase in blog reading and the decrease in professional news reporting.

I'm going to continue with this great experiment that would make Thomas Paine and Benjamin Franklin proud. With blogs, great essays akin to Paine's Common Sense are being written daily. Blogs are political and social criticism taken to the Nth degree and have made more than a few targets uncomfortable. With the state of the country right now, blogs will only grow stronger in my opinion as people go to outside sources for information they aren't getting in the MSM.

Anyway, why say in one paragraph what can be said in five, right Scott? I just want to say thanks to those who read me daily, monthly or even just once. You are as much a part of this free-flowing dialogue as anyone and you're much appreciated.

On Bloggers and Newspapers

This morning I was listening to the Michael Smerconish show on local radio. He's a George H.W. Bush Republican who is not much of a conservative although he's the always the guy "on the right" on MSNBC whenever they do one of those inane side-by-side screenshot deals.

Anyway, Smerconish said for the second time in two shows that he's bummed about the state of the newspaper business and is worried because if they go, what will take their place? He also railed against bloggers again and is one of these who has to throw in the obligatory "guy writing on his couch in his pajamas" types. For the record, he also writes for the Philly Inquirer and Daily News and they are in bankruptcy as we speak. His latest on this topic can be found here.

Perhaps Mr. Smerconish needs an education about just how blogs work. Perhaps he's not been enlightened to the fact that newspapers and blogs help each other to survive. A good link from Matt Drudge could bring a paper somewhere between 500,000 and a million unique hits (and newspapers beg him for those links). That is potentially a million folks who would not have gone to that papers' website. The same goes for Glenn Reynolds who is more of a pure blogger. A link from him could result in 30,000 uniques in a day. In the online world, links mean revenue and newspapers are never going to survive without a robust web presence. So a guy "sitting on his couch" is directly benefiting the health of the news paper industry.

Smerconish lamented that without the daily paper, we'd not have had Watergate exposed, the NSA wiretapping investigation or myriad other scandals. And therein lies the problem. Note they were both against the GOP and most in-depth pieces in the papers are. Bias is why we saw a rapid decline in newspaper circulation.

Let me take you back to 2004 when Smerconish's current employer--the Philadelphia Inquirer--ran a 21-day endorsement for John Kerry. 21-days of explaining why Kerry was far superior to George W. Bush was met with raised eyebrows by even the most liberal of journalists. It was pure and simple propaganda by the Inqy and it laid open the bias of the media in grand fashion.

Fast-forward to 2008 and you'll see example number two of why newspapers are dying. The Rev. Wright scandal, William Ayers and Bernadine Dornh's terrorist past, the inner workings of Chicago politics and Obama's scars from it, The shady housing deal with Tony Rezko and the list goes on and on. The main job of the press is to keep politicians in check and they failed miserably this time even more than in the past. They became cheerleaders and dropped any pretense of fair play and non-partisanship. One day they printed a story in the NY Times intimating that John McCain was having an affair and the next the WaPo drooled over Obama's pecs. One day the Times slammed Cindy McCain and the next they fawned over Michelle Obama's intellect. In other words, they shamed every previous journalist worth his salt. I won't even go into how they smeared Sarah Palin repeatedly and daily, whcih may have been the most disturbing media action of the entire election.

There was a time when every politician was fair game and now it's only the ones with an "R" after their name. If the media had done their job and properly vetted Obama, I'd strongly suspect we'd have Hillary Clinton in the White house right now. If they had written of Father Pfleger or the fact that Obama's half-brother is living in a hovel in Kenya on less than a buck a day, it would have had an effect. No one would have known of any of this had it not been for blogs and conservative websites.

One thing Smerconish doesn't get is the fact that not one serious blogger, be they huge like LGF or Glenn Reynolds or small like me want to see newspapers gone. We rely on them and have an interesting symbiotic relationship with them in this brave, new, Internet world. Smerconish has become an elitist because he thinks only "journalists" can break news. Maybe he ought to read Pajama's Media on occasion and see just how good writing can be by "people sitting on their couch." Hell, the way Maureen Dowd mails it in every week, one suspects she's writing while sitting in her basement on a pullout couch but I digress. For the record, again, I subscribe to the Inquirer and have for a decade, I like the feel of the paper and the portability but have to say the bias turns me off.

One last thing, Ed links to this former conservative and current Obama groupie Kathleen Parker who writes:

The biggest challenge facing America’s struggling newspaper industry may not be the high cost of newsprint or lost ad revenue, but ignorance stoked by drive-by punditry.

Yes, Dittoheads, you heard it right.

Drive-by pundits, to spin off of Rush Limbaugh’s “drive-by media,” are non-journalists who have been demonizing the media for the past 20 years or so and who blame the current news crisis on bias.

Parker gets it exactly wrong and like Smerconish sounds elitist. Was Thomas Paine a "trained" journalist? Did Ben Franklin go to Columbia or Syracuse and learn how to be a journalist? This country was built on a free press and the free exchange of ideas. people get their news in different ways now and Parker is upset that her conduit is taking a financial beating. She has to blame someone and lashes out at at "untrained" journalist's for the train wreck daily publication has become. I tend to think it's more a case of the industry employing people like Ms. Parker who have a desperately hard time changing with the times and fearing that the future is here and their place in it is not as secure as it once was.

To sum up this considerable rant, I don't want to see the local fishwrap go the way of the VCR. I want a vibrant, unbiased print media where every politician should fear for his seat. I want a media that will not blame the mortgage meltdown solely on industry but also on the Chris Dodd's and Barney Franks of the world who made the laws that allowed this to happen. I want to pick up the Inquirer and read a piece by Ed Rendell one day, Bill Kristol the next and Michael Smerconish the next. I want to read about every scandal written with the exact same gusto--the Dodd scandal investigated with the same zeal as the Abramoff scandal.

People like Mr. Smerconish and Ms. Parker can't see the writing on the wall but one would suspect when all is said and done, the death of the media will be traced to 2008 when they assisted getting Obama elected but more so that the only real journalist's we have left work for the National Enquirer and broke the John Edwards story while the rest of the media covered for him.

Hamas Supporters Show that Islam Is About Love and Peace...Or Not

I believe I saw the required Che poster as well as International A.N.S.W.E.R. ones as well. But more importantly, note how the Sun-Sentinel reported whitewashed the event, no mention of the woman with the head scarf and kaffiyeh screaming "go back to the ovens" or "your mother is a whore".

The Hamas-supporters got quite violent as the event went on and it took the work of a guy with a video camera to get the inside story.

Note the guy who creepily says that once people understand Islam they "will have no choice but to accept it as part of their nature" at about the 6:00 mark. Islam does mean submission.

Thanks to people like Trento and Zombie, we get a great insight into how the anti-war, terror-supporting groups agitate and work their followers up into a lather. One of these events will get violent real soon.

Sullivan's Pretzel Logic on Abortion and Torture

Try to follow the great St. Andrew as he twists himself in a complete knot in one paragraph. Let's break it down, shall we?

I could never be an abortionist and admire those in the medical profession who refuse to become one. The difference of course, is that the government is actually torturing; it is not merely permitting torture.

The "government" is not doing the "torturing", (Sullivan calls waterboarding torture), it has policies in place that say what can and can't be used to coerce information. By that thinking that Sullivan puts to pixels, the government by allowing abortion is thereby aborting. You can't say one and then exclude the other using that logic.

And so all of us are far more directly implicated in the government's torture than we are in a constitutional regime in which other private citizens are permitted to abort the unborn children of consenting women.

Wrong! We, by allowing abortion to remain legal are implicated in the deaths of millions of children. some very late term and viable and some who are born alive and then killed (what some may call torture far worse than waterboarding).

I guess that Sullivan is so incoherent at this point--what with trying to prove that Trig Palin is Bristols' and all--that he can't put together a logical argument without twisting himself into a gobsmackingly crazy-ass pretzel.

Why Aren't Left-Wing Blogs Reporting on Mumbai Story?

I find it intriguing that very few left-of-center blogs are reporting on the terror attacks in India. This is a story with world-wide implications and people from myriad nations were killed or injured.

It goes to reason that this is a story that should capture their attention as I'm presuming that those targeted and killed were intellectuals and probably liberal-minded. Conservatives from Britain, Australia and America would generally not be the people I would think of as residing or visiting India. I may be wrong but details I've read seem to show this is the case.

In scanning the lefty blogs, I found a blurb from Taylor Marsh sandwiched between a story about Rosie O'Donnell and shopping. Sullivan posts a cut and paste about the Indian/Muslim "divide" and the effect it may have on Obama and Talk Left has a cut and paste post as well with no comment. The only lefty who has run more than one or two posts is TPM.

Maybe it's because they can't quite grasp the violence of the attacks or that they have no concept of weapons, tactics or the military in general so they don't feel comfortable writing about such things. But this is the present and the future, terror attacks are not going away because Obama is inaugurated. The Pakistanis and the Indians are not going to shake hands and sing Imagine just because Obama is sitting in the Oval Office (update: He's already pissed off the Indians). Obama will have to deal with terrorism and odds are that those who wish us harm will get lucky and hit us once again at home.

Liberals are going to have to realize that you can't just puts you fingers in your ears and scream "la la la" while keeping your eyes closed every time terrorists hit. This is a real problem with no clear solutions. You can't throw money at the problem or negotiate with those who have no feelings when executing children. The way to negotiate is from the trigger side of a gun, they understand force and nothing else.

My guess is if they could pin this on President Bush, we'd be hearing a lot more from the liberal blogosphere. Otherwise, we hear nothing but silence.
