Governor Corbett Takes on the NCAA

Sphere: Related Content

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett has picked a fight and he sure hopes to win.

The summary is this: Corbett agreed last year to the NCAA sanctions against Penn State for the Jerry Sandusky pedophile case. The sanctions and fines levied against PSU were huge including four years of no bowls, erasing over 100 wins, fines of $60-million and the list goes on.

Fast forward to the present where Corbett has sued the NCAA in what could be a land mark case. Corbett's thinking is this:

“These sanctions did not punish Sandusky, nor did they punish the others who have been criminally charged,” Corbett said Wednesday at a news conference in State College, Pa. “Rather, they punished the past, the present, the local businesses and the citizens of Pennsylvania.”
I agree with this whole-heartedly. It also punishes the student and players who had absolutely nothing to do with the case. And not just football players but volleyball players, women's basketball, etc, who rely on the football-generated revenue to survive. The girl in the drama department may hate football but she is dependent on that money being there to put on the next play.

And Corbett has another point about the local businesses, if people aren't going to see games in Happy Valley, the hotels, restaurants and deli's are going to close. This would be a disaster for a region that doesn't have many other revenue and job sources.

I get that there was a c over-up and I get that people have a visceral emotional reaction to this. I also get that Corbett risks getting tarnished with the Mean Old Republican brush since he's taking the side of a college that condoned pedophilia and it's a purely political move (that's how it's being spun).

Call me a contrarian or call me wrong but I see nothing wrong with PSU taking on the NCAA. The NCAA ceased being an organization that cares for student athletes a long time ago. Now they are a behemoth that always gets its way through sheer force. I don't expect anything different in this case. The NCAA does not care about the players or the fans (the very existence of the BCS all these years is proof of that), they care about money and money only.

Many are asking why Corbett agreed to the fines and sanctions back when they were announced. It's simple, the emotions of the moment did not allow anyone to speak out against the penalties. If you thought they were too harsh, you were a heartless bastard who didn't care about The Children.

If you want to waste five minutes of your time you'll never get back, go read this drivel by hack Karen Heller in the Inquirer. No facts, a bunch of cheap shots at conservatives and zero redeeming value.

PA Booming While NY Loses Out on Billions

Sphere: Related Content

In yet another example of liberal policies hurting economic activity, the state of New York is sitting on a veritable pool of natural gas and won't let anyone touch it. Pennsylvania and West Virginia, to their credit, have put procedures and policies in place to safely remove the gas while reaping huge benefits and reducing natural gas retail costs for homeowners and businesses:

PITTSBURGH - Marcellus shale gas wells in Pennsylvania generated about $3.5 billion in gross revenues for drillers in 2011, along with about $1.2 billion in West Virginia, according to an analysis by The Associated Press.
That's a huge amount of revenue for businesses and employees and a nice windfall for the state in tax revenue. How many jobs have been created by exploiting these wells? Think about not only the drilling companies but the people who supply them: drill equipment suppliers, fuel suppliers, local restaurants, motels, convenience stores, etc. The ripple effect is enormous. It's only going to get better:

Patrick Creighton, a spokesman for the Marcellus Shale Coalition, an industry group, estimated that it costs the industry about $5 million to bring a well into production. With about 2,200 active wells in the state, that comes to $11 billion in additional investments, mostly over the last four years. The industry is also building or planning billions of dollars of new pipeline construction.

But not just businesses are booming, individuals are making a nice chunk of change as well:

Creighton said the minimum royalty in Pennsylvania is 12.5 percent of well revenues, meaning property owners here were paid more than $400 million last year.
So why is New York missing out on what is essentially the fastest growing business in the region? Because the legislature--led by mainly urban liberals based in NYC--are blocking any opportunity for shale gas to be extracted. The ban is in place until June of this year but I expect that the moratorium will be extended, thus allowing Pennsylvania to continue being the premiere state for gas extraction and sale. If Gov. Cuomo does see the light and allow hydraulic fracturing, I would bet that the regulations will be so oppressive that the state will fail to see the benefits other have. Environmentalists will not give up without a fight, though.

Some "Oops" are Bad and Some are Ignored

Sphere: Related Content

In what is the latest example of a liberal picking and ignoring his facts to support his conclusion, I bring you "progressive" blogger Michael Wood.

Mr. Wood hates drilling in the Marcellus Shale natural gas sites in Pennsylvania; an industry that has created numerous jobs and helped the US become more energy independent. The former governor of that great state just across the Delaware River from me decided--smartly--that he would allow it and would tax it. He saw the potential for creating jobs and increasing revenue. As with all tax estimates, the numbers were off somewhat:

Back in May, the Department estimated that taxable Marcellus Shale royalties generated $102.7 million in PIT collections in 2010. Now the Department says that figure is a tad lower — $46.2 million, a decrease of $56.5 million or over 55% from what was reported six months ago. To quote Britney Spears, “Oops!”
Yes, that's million, with an "m". And yes, this imbecile included a decade old quote from a bad album to punctuate his point...dude, really?

Mr. Wood goes on to excoriate the entire industry and rail about the amount of taxes received from that sector, which is supposed to indict Governor Corbett and the industry as a whole. The essay was so good that it made to the front page of hard left circle jerk FDL from it's original post on some obscure lefty blog dedicated to PA state issues.

So I entered the search terms "General Motors" in the original site where Mr. Wood usually drivels to see if he or any of his brethren over there ever wrote anything about the abortion known as the auto bailout. To my complete surprise, there was one obscure mention about GM and it was about a plant closing in Edison.

So I got to thinking; how could Mr. Wood be upset about a report that showed a 55% shortfall in estimated taxes for a thriving PA industry but not get equally as irked about a union bailout using billions of dollars in taxpayer money--money already collected, not estimated--that will result in the American people being short-changed $23.6 billion. Yes, with a "b". How can this be? I mean, we have the gas drillers bringing tens of millions of dollars and thousands of jobs into a part of the state that desperately needs it, which provided millions in new revenue versus a bailout that was basically a campaign plan using our money and shoring up dying, crony unions.

And that describes the liberal mindset in a nutshell. Poorly estimated tax revenue that equals roughly ten minutes of federal government spending versus losses of billions on a bailout that helped no one but the United Auto Workers leadership, which one is worse?

As we see in Mr. Wood's post, there's no comparison. And the irony that the state's estimates were--as he suggested--a mistake while Obama's plan functioned by design is lost on him completely.

Remembering 9/11

Sphere: Related Content

Today we'll read in the op/ed sections of our local papers what 9/11 meant, what it didn't mean, how it affected us or didn't, whether we should have gone to war in Afghanistan and Iraq or not and even that tired old liberal canard that we deserved it. Somewhere out there is a piece written that will be so ridiculous as to be ridiculed and scorned. I nominate this one or maybe this.

Anyhow, it's just BS in the whole scheme of things. No one cares what some left-wing hack in the Inquirer thinks when one just steps back, blocks out the partisan bickering and thinks about the lives lost that day. People whose only crime was to go to work. Christians, Jews, Hindus, Muslims and atheists who were sitting at desks or cleaning firefighting equipment one moment and the next were in a fight for their lives. Black, white and yellow-skinned people who were safe one minute and forced to make the decision between jumping to there deaths on the streets of New York or be engulfed in fire the next.

A non-military target was one of the three selected that day and one that was chosen because the attack would kill the most people possible. One can argue that yes, the Pentagon was indeed a legitimate military target or even the Capitol. But no one in their right mind could ever see a building designed for housing the worlds largest financial firms as a legitimate one...except the formerly fringe psycho lefty who looks at capitalism as the only enemy but that's a post for another day.

No, this is a day where we remember those who died in the worst terrorist attack ever carried out on American soil. There was no explicit warning unless one includes Mogadishu, the African embassies, the USS Cole and Osama bin-Laden plainly saying that he's at war with America but why quibble. Those men and women were killed by ideological and religious zealots. Liberals have used the term "terrorists" to describe tea party folks of late. It shows their utter depravity when one recalls what real terrorism looked, felt and sounded like.

So here we are ten-years later with the threat still real because we chose to not face it head-on. We don't wish to upset those who follow the same religion as the ones who flew three planes into two buildings. We say "not all Muslims are terrorists" yet it appears that most terrorist's are Muslims. I haven't seen too many Episcopalians strapping a bomb vest to dog ans ending it into a group of people for maximum, murderous effect.

But that's beside the point. I remember watching the towers burn and fall from the Verrazano-narrows Bridge and the Belt Parkway in Brooklyn. I remember the thought that they've finally done it, they used our freedoms against us. They've managed to plan and carry out an attack that showed their true barbarity and disregard for human life. Now all of America will understand that we have been in an undeclared war with an enemy that speaks of God but rallies behind the devil. How could anyone watch those poor souls leap from those buildings and not grasp that simple fact?

Alas, we returned to our old ways. liberals blamed America instead of bin-Laden. George Bush had more to do with the treacherous act than Mohammed Atta. Dick Cheney planned for this as much as Khalid Sheikh Mohammed they said. Bush knew was the liberal mantra. The fact that we turned down the easy capture or kill of bin-Laden was easily ignored. The anti-war left fired up those old 1960's engines of protest and hatred of country and didn't put them away until January 2009 when one of their own came to power and invaded another Muslim land.

I'm bitter. I'm bitter that those who died that day are not remembered by half of this country as the murder victims they were. I've heard people allude to "getting over 9/11" but I will not. I am reminded every day I look across the Hudson River and see the towers not where they should be. I see it in every town in northeastern New Jersey who lost moms and dads. I see it in my own town where the pilot of Flight 93 lived and opted to raise his family in a nice quiet suburban setting and had that dream torn away by a zealot with a utility knife screaming "allahu akhbar".

I mourn those who were lost and those who have to live every day without their loved one who was murdered.

but don't worry liberals, this day will pass and what you consider jingoistic garbage will fade so you can go back to your blame America first mentality without being regarded as crass soon enough. For me, I think I'll keep pointing out your idiocy and say a prayer for those who died.

A must read by Mark Steyn here.

PA Actively Killing Jobs and Budget Relief

Sphere: Related Content

In a perfect world, the Obama administration would have looked to the massive deposits of energy-producing raw materials we have under our feet to stimulate the economy. Instead he bowed to the altar of environmentalism more deeply than he bowed to the king of Saudi Arabia. He could have offered a plan that included tax credits to businesses who could extract oil, coal, natural gas that were new, clean and sustainable. Energy companies would have jumped at it and believe me; as someone in the business, the means to do so are what Obama would have called "shovel ready". We have environmentally friendly means that have been developed and can be implemented at will.

The jobs that would have been created would have been in the hardest hit states who are desperately seeking jobs like West Virginia, New York and rural Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania and parts of New York are in the midst of a modern day gold rush but the substance isn't a solid, it's natural gas and the amounts in the Marcellus Shale deposits would give us a serious leg up on the world when it comes to self-sufficiency in that particular raw material.

Instead The One poured our money into pork projects, handouts and funds for "community organizing" that do anything but.

Today, the state of Pennsylvania drove another stake through the heart of budget balancing and reducing the unemployment rolls by withdrawing a permit for water treatment for one of the largest gas-extracting operations in the country:

Months ago, with little public awareness, the Delaware County wastewater treatment plant got a state permit to accept wastewater from natural gas-drilling operations hundreds of miles away.

The plan was to take the polluted water from the burgeoning - and contentious - industry in the Marcellus Shale region, transport it by truck or train to the Chester facility, treat it there, and then discharge it into the Delaware River.

Until yesterday, that is, when the permit was abruptly rescinded.
Note the negative use of "polluted". Most water is polluted before it's treated, hell, toilet water is "polluted" as is water from your clothes and dish washer when it's discharged.

More:

Yet getting the gas out of the ground requires millions of gallons of water to fracture - or "frack" - the shale. Companies add various chemicals to increase the water's effectiveness, and the fracking process deep underground can contaminate the wastewater with toxics and natural radioactivity.
Again, note the use of the word "toxics"; it's misleading. Everything is toxic according to what we used to call science (before Climategate). Paracelsus; a Swiss chemist came up with this hypothesis on toxicity and it's not been disproven to this day:

“Alle Ding sind Gift und nichts ohn Gift; alein die Dosis macht das ein Ding kein Gift ist” [all things are poison and notwithout poison; only the dose makes a thing not a poison”]. With the exception of E = mc2, perhaps no other single statement has wielded such force in establishing the popular notoriety and the professional stature of an individual in the history of science as the words just quoted.
What he meant was simply that everything is toxic. If you're thirsty and drink a glass of water, you're no longer thirsty. If you drink fifteen, you will have an adverse or toxic reaction. Example here.

I digress but my point is the MSM always uses loaded words when discussing environmental issues.

Let's continue with the PA story:

Companies need ways to deal with the wastewater. Options include treating it on-site, reusing it, injecting it into deep wells and transporting it to wastewater treatment plants.

But treatment has been problematic because the water has impurities known as "total dissolved solids" and other contaminants, such as chlorides (salt) and sulfates.
Dissolved solids, chlorides and sulfates are all easily treatable and can be accomplished by any municipal treatment plant in Iraq. Again, misleading.

Most plants cannot remove the solids (a lie--ed). On April 16, the DEP announced discharge standards limiting the solids in the wastewater effluent.

But just five weeks earlier, on March 9, the state approved a permit for the Delaware County Regional Water Quality Control Authority, which was already discharging levels of solids that were higher than the new standards, to accept this solids-laden water in Chester.

The approval meant that the plant would be "grandfathered," not having to comply with the new standards until its permit was changed for other reasons, DEP officials acknowledged.
So the plant currently can discharge the solids but now because it's coming from a shale site, they suddenly can't?

This is a plan by Pennsylvania to limit the extraction of a valuable commodity that would lift the standards of living in a depressed area but in Obamanation we must not piss off Gaia. Ed Rendell is falling right in line like a good little puppy dog while his state is withering and dying.

Meanwhile, China, Russia and other nations are getting fat, dumb and happy while devastating their environment.

How's That Switch to the Dems Working Out, Arlen?

Sphere: Related Content

Many people just can't seem to understand Pennsylvania politics. Hell, I live next to the state and can't understand the shenanigans across the Delaware River at times. They elected John Murtha after he called them racist but I digress.

But what of Specter?

The GOP establishment didn't push Specter aside; the voters did. In the weeks leading up to Specter's defection, Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, the head of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, heartily endorsed him. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's PAC gave $10,000 to Specter's campaign.

Institutional Republicans were trying to bail Specter out - just as they did in 2004, when the NRSC gave him $320,000 and individual Republican senators kicked in $83,000 to protect him in the primary.

The problem was with actual Republican voters, who, much to the consternation of the elites, don't always follow orders. The party couldn't have "kept" Specter if it wanted to (which it did), because Republican voters didn't want him! Once upon a time, the spectacle of voters defying party bosses out of principle would have been seen as healthy and virtuous.

Pennsylvania is a blue state, but it's not Massachusetts. One of the assertions surrounding Specter's switch is that only a moderate Republican such as Specter can win in true-blue Pennsylvania. Really?

Rick Santorum won two elections here, and the Democrats who have been successful statewide (Gov. Rendell, Bob Casey, Bob Casey Jr.) have been well to the right of the Democratic mainstream.
Exactly right. The Keystone State elected Santorum--a conservative ideologue--twice and only failed to re-elect him because he was unfortunate enough to have come up for re-election during the downturn in Iraq. He was on Bush's coat tails and they led to the abyss.

As for Specter becoming a traitor and bailing on the GOP, it seems his new party wants him even less and is treating him in ways the Republicans never could have sunk to. He's probably realizing that those mean things said about the Dems being liars are really quite true.

Specter has made his bed and it's small and lumpy. I am enjoying the schadenfreude so damn much.

Look for Tom Ridge to be the next Senator and beat Specter in 2010 by five or six points.

Update: Specter seemed to have a senior moment yesterday and forgot which team he now plays for.

It's On: Specter vs. GOP

Sphere: Related Content

Sen. Arlen Specter blames GOP policies for the death of Jack Kemp:

"Well, I was sorry to disappoint many people. Frankly, I was disappointed that the Republican Party didn't want me as their candidate," Mr. Specter said on CBS's "Face the Nation." "But as a matter of principle, I'm becoming much more comfortable with the Democrats' approach. And one of the items that I'm working on, Bob, is funding for medical research."

Mr. Specter continued: "If we had pursued what President Nixon declared in 1970 as the war on cancer, we would have cured many strains. I think Jack Kemp would be alive today. And that research has saved or prolonged many lives, including mine."
It didn't take long for "single bullet theory" Arlen to learn the Dem playbook, did it? You find an issue or an event that is in the news and bad and blame it on the GOP. It's simple. It used to be that everything was blamed on Bush but he's gone now so they just use the generic "Republicans" now. Specter always creeped me out but now the guy is just plain reprehensible.

But our hero Sen. specter has riled his new friends and there's serious rumblings that he will face a challenge from his left in Joe Sestak; a primary battle he could lose if Sestak had the guts to go against Senate leadership and the Obama administration. Add to that the fact that Pat Toomey will be a considerable foe--especially if the economy remains in the tank.

I would be surprised if Senator Specter is in the Senate after the 2010 general.

Don't Let the Door Hit Ya In the Ass, Arlen

Sphere: Related Content

Good riddance Senator Specter:

Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter will switch his party affiliation from Republican to Democrat and announced today that he will run in 2010 as a Democrat, according to a statement he released this morning.

Specter's decision would give Democrats a 60 seat filibuster proof majority in the Senate assuming Democrat Al Franken is eventually sworn in as the next senator from Minnesota. (Former senator Norm Coleman is appealing Franken's victory in the state Supreme Court.)

"I have decided to run for re-election in 2010 in the Democratic primary," said Specter in a statement. "I am ready, willing and anxious to take on all comers and have my candidacy for re-election determined in a general election."

He added: "Since my election in 1980, as part of the Reagan Big Tent, the Republican Party has moved far to the right. Last year, more than 200,000 Republicans in Pennsylvania changed their registration to become Democrats. I now find my political philosophy more in line with Democrats than Republicans."

Let's parse this for a sec. The Democrat party has gone very far left and Specter says his philosophy is more in line? We should be thanking the good Lord that we have finally rid ourselves of the man who dreamed up the single bullet theory, voted against his own party on crucial issues and recently was a deciding vote in passing the stimulus boondoggle after being wined and dined by The One. He invoked Reagan but was far from a Reagan Democrat let alone a Reagan Republican.

Please leave Senator and join the party that will now be the undisputed leader of the country and will be held responsible when we stagnate for another year or so. Toomey may not beat you but he will embarrass you during the general.

This was nothing a move of political expediency and Specter has shown that he is a man of low moral standing and possesses no scruples at all. He cares about Arlen and Arlen only. He should fit right in with the party of Obama.

I consider myself an American first, then a Conservative and finally a Republican. For years, Specter has been a shady Republican, not a conservative and bailing on your team when the stakes are high to join the winner is not only un-American but not something that any self-respecting Pennsylvanian would ever do.

I think this hurts him badly if Toomey can play it right.

Specter Finally Grows a Pair?

Sphere: Related Content

Either that or the esteemed Sen. Arlen Specter (RINO-PA) is worried about Pat Toomey ousting him in the primary in 2010. He better not even think of crossing the GOP faithful again after voting for the insane stimulus trainwreck of a bill.

Specter has said he will vote against the Employee Free Choice Act (and is anything but), also known as card check whereby unions would have an easier time organizing. The act would ban privacy when voting whether to unionize or not and is among the more un-American and un-Constitutional pieces of legislation to come along in quite some time.

I guess Specter has been paying attention to the news as the conservative Toomey is gaining and in some cases has surpassed the senator.

Specter Sells Out the GOP (Again) On Stimulus

Sphere: Related Content

A bill that won't really help his state in the long run has drawn Sen. Arlen Specter to the dark side--a place he seems comfortable--all in the name of "bipartisanship". Specter doesn't quite grasp that when all is said and done, you probably won't want your name remotely associated with this socialist spending agenda wrapped in stimulus clothing. But hey, Arlen, you'll be remembered for two things: the magic bullet theory and selling out your party in its most crucial moment. A legacy to be proud of I'm sure.

The Keystone State will get roughly the following (unless Specter was given a few extra billion and a nice rub behind the ears from Reid):

PENNSYLVANIA
Highways and Bridges: $1.3 billion
Mass Transit: $245.4 million
Wastewater Treatment and Sewers: $229.9 million
Heat Aid: $66.4 million
Schools Modernization: $821.8 million
Pell Grants: $878.8 million

That's not all that much and will not be as stimulative as Specter hopes. As I mentioned before, the state of NJ has allocated $2.3 billion in funding for schools this fiscal year. Jersey is much smaller than PA so this $3-billion+ package is not going to have the desired effect. Add to that the fat throughout and this is one big pile of steaming bullshit.

Specter and two other senators have said they would cross the aisle an vote for it, against their party's wishes and the wishes of their constituents. Specter has sentenced the children Lock Haven, Erie, Jim Thorpe, Chester, York, Shanksville and State College to a life of paying off this debt that will not help them long term or even in the short term. Congratulations Wiiliamsport, you and everyone else in the country who are jobless and suffering are helping to build a dog park for $555,000 in Chula Vista, CA and are allowing a struggling New York artist to create the next Jesus in urine "art" from money given the NEA. You must be so happy.

My guess is that the people of Pennsylvania who "cling to guns and religion" and even those so-called "racist's" out west in Murtha's district will take a few more looks at Senator Specter and decide whether or not he served their best interests. If he votes for this, he fails that test. The GOP was in the midst of resurgence and now that momentum is being pissed on by Specter, Collins and Snowe.

Bring on Pat Toomey.

Anecdotal news here but the polls were packed. NJ is not even close to a swing state but if there's huge turnout in the city of Philadelphia, it may not be enough for John McCain to win large swaths of the middle of the state.

The southwest suburbs and the northeast areas such as Scranton and Allentown will be crucial as will Pike, Potter and Centre Counties. Carbon, Lehigh and Allegheny tunout for McCain are imperative. Palin played well there.

Remember: as PA goes, so goes McCain. If he loses PA, he loses the entire election.

Election Prediction

Sphere: Related Content

This is tough as the polls are so damned screwed up that we're essentially blind. I imagine that McCain will win Florida, Virginia (a huge supposition) and North Carolina and Obama will win Colorado and New Mexico. That leave the crucial states of Pennsylvania and Ohio. These states are too damn fluid right about now. How will the coal comments play or what effect will Murtha's comment about Pennsy folks being racist and redneck have? What about Obama's clinger" comments?

Pennsy shakes out this way: An enormous turnout in Philly is a must for Obama. The questions remain; will African-Americans show up as the track record says no but there's never been a black man running before. Plus, will white union members vote for Obama? Again, an unknown. I'm going to call PA for McCain.

Ohio is a different animal. Where PA has two major cities, Ohio has more and the urban vote is a liberal one. If McCain can harvest those who may just be hearing about the coal comments, he may well pull it out.

I tend to be with Ed on this one, I like McCain in a squeaker. Allah begs to differ.

Sweet: Murtha Resorts to Begging

Sphere: Related Content

I wouldn't count on much from your "racist" and "redneck" constituents:

Veteran Democratic Rep. John Murtha (Pa.) has sent out a last-minute plea for $1 million to save his hotly contested seat, endangered by his own remarks describing his district as racist.

In an e-mail sent to potential donors, Murtha’s campaign asked his supporters to maximize all campaign contributions.

“We need to raise another $1 million to compete,” his campaign fundraiser Susan O’Neill wrote in the e-mail obtained by The Hill. “We need money immediately.”

O’Neill blamed Republicans from outside Pennsylvania for Murtha’s problems. Polls show Murtha, running for his 18th term, ahead of his GOP opponent by just a few percentage points.
What's amusing is it is Democrats from outside Pennsylvania that Murtha is appealing to for help. GOP supporters outside PA = Bad. Dem supporters outside PA = Good. See, it's easy.

Obama Locks Up the Important Hooker Demographic

Sphere: Related Content

It may just put him on top in PA:

John McCain and Barack Obama, if you're wooing a population of registered voters who are young, female and drawn to men in suits, then Allegheny County has 675 ladies ready to pull your lever.

They're convicted streetwalkers, escorts and brothel babes collared in 2000 and from 2003-2006, uncovered by the Trib.

Based on the prostitutes' voter registration cards, they're destined to become Obama girls in November. That's because 78 percent of them registered as Democrats. Countywide, Dems make up only about 62 percent of voters, according to the Division of Elections.
Hey, why not? They don't pay taxes, will get a stimulus check and have a man they can be proud of in DC. Plus, they are some of the only Pennsylvanians that don't "cling" to guns and religion...well, at least religion.
