How's That Switch to the Dems Working Out, Arlen?

Many people just can't seem to understand Pennsylvania politics. Hell, I live next to the state and can't understand the shenanigans across the Delaware River at times. They elected John Murtha after he called them racist but I digress.

But what of Specter?

The GOP establishment didn't push Specter aside; the voters did. In the weeks leading up to Specter's defection, Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, the head of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, heartily endorsed him. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's PAC gave $10,000 to Specter's campaign.

Institutional Republicans were trying to bail Specter out - just as they did in 2004, when the NRSC gave him $320,000 and individual Republican senators kicked in $83,000 to protect him in the primary.

The problem was with actual Republican voters, who, much to the consternation of the elites, don't always follow orders. The party couldn't have "kept" Specter if it wanted to (which it did), because Republican voters didn't want him! Once upon a time, the spectacle of voters defying party bosses out of principle would have been seen as healthy and virtuous.

Pennsylvania is a blue state, but it's not Massachusetts. One of the assertions surrounding Specter's switch is that only a moderate Republican such as Specter can win in true-blue Pennsylvania. Really?

Rick Santorum won two elections here, and the Democrats who have been successful statewide (Gov. Rendell, Bob Casey, Bob Casey Jr.) have been well to the right of the Democratic mainstream.

Exactly right. The Keystone State elected Santorum--a conservative ideologue--twice and only failed to re-elect him because he was unfortunate enough to have come up for re-election during the downturn in Iraq. He was on Bush's coat tails and they led to the abyss.

As for Specter becoming a traitor and bailing on the GOP, it seems his new party wants him even less and is treating him in ways the Republicans never could have sunk to. He's probably realizing that those mean things said about the Dems being liars are really quite true.

Specter has made his bed and it's small and lumpy. I am enjoying the schadenfreude so damn much.

Look for Tom Ridge to be the next Senator and beat Specter in 2010 by five or six points.

Update: Specter seemed to have a senior moment yesterday and forgot which team he now plays for.

Tuesday Morning News and Notes

Still raining and has been for what seems a week. I'm going to build an ark.

It's On: Specter vs. GOP

Sen. Arlen Specter blames GOP policies for the death of Jack Kemp:

"Well, I was sorry to disappoint many people. Frankly, I was disappointed that the Republican Party didn't want me as their candidate," Mr. Specter said on CBS's "Face the Nation." "But as a matter of principle, I'm becoming much more comfortable with the Democrats' approach. And one of the items that I'm working on, Bob, is funding for medical research."

Mr. Specter continued: "If we had pursued what President Nixon declared in 1970 as the war on cancer, we would have cured many strains. I think Jack Kemp would be alive today. And that research has saved or prolonged many lives, including mine."

It didn't take long for "single bullet theory" Arlen to learn the Dem playbook, did it? You find an issue or an event that is in the news and bad and blame it on the GOP. It's simple. It used to be that everything was blamed on Bush but he's gone now so they just use the generic "Republicans" now. Specter always creeped me out but now the guy is just plain reprehensible.

But our hero Sen. specter has riled his new friends and there's serious rumblings that he will face a challenge from his left in Joe Sestak; a primary battle he could lose if Sestak had the guts to go against Senate leadership and the Obama administration. Add to that the fact that Pat Toomey will be a considerable foe--especially if the economy remains in the tank.

I would be surprised if Senator Specter is in the Senate after the 2010 general.

Don't Let the Door Hit Ya In the Ass, Arlen

Good riddance Senator Specter:

Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter will switch his party affiliation from Republican to Democrat and announced today that he will run in 2010 as a Democrat, according to a statement he released this morning.

Specter's decision would give Democrats a 60 seat filibuster proof majority in the Senate assuming Democrat Al Franken is eventually sworn in as the next senator from Minnesota. (Former senator Norm Coleman is appealing Franken's victory in the state Supreme Court.)

"I have decided to run for re-election in 2010 in the Democratic primary," said Specter in a statement. "I am ready, willing and anxious to take on all comers and have my candidacy for re-election determined in a general election."

He added: "Since my election in 1980, as part of the Reagan Big Tent, the Republican Party has moved far to the right. Last year, more than 200,000 Republicans in Pennsylvania changed their registration to become Democrats. I now find my political philosophy more in line with Democrats than Republicans."

Let's parse this for a sec. The Democrat party has gone very far left and Specter says his philosophy is more in line? We should be thanking the good Lord that we have finally rid ourselves of the man who dreamed up the single bullet theory, voted against his own party on crucial issues and recently was a deciding vote in passing the stimulus boondoggle after being wined and dined by The One. He invoked Reagan but was far from a Reagan Democrat let alone a Reagan Republican.

Please leave Senator and join the party that will now be the undisputed leader of the country and will be held responsible when we stagnate for another year or so. Toomey may not beat you but he will embarrass you during the general.

This was nothing a move of political expediency and Specter has shown that he is a man of low moral standing and possesses no scruples at all. He cares about Arlen and Arlen only. He should fit right in with the party of Obama.

I consider myself an American first, then a Conservative and finally a Republican. For years, Specter has been a shady Republican, not a conservative and bailing on your team when the stakes are high to join the winner is not only un-American but not something that any self-respecting Pennsylvanian would ever do.

I think this hurts him badly if Toomey can play it right.

Specter Finally Grows a Pair?

Either that or the esteemed Sen. Arlen Specter (RINO-PA) is worried about Pat Toomey ousting him in the primary in 2010. He better not even think of crossing the GOP faithful again after voting for the insane stimulus trainwreck of a bill.

Specter has said he will vote against the Employee Free Choice Act (and is anything but), also known as card check whereby unions would have an easier time organizing. The act would ban privacy when voting whether to unionize or not and is among the more un-American and un-Constitutional pieces of legislation to come along in quite some time.

I guess Specter has been paying attention to the news as the conservative Toomey is gaining and in some cases has surpassed the senator.

Porkulus Passes, Lord help Us

It's done:

The Senate approved an $838 billion economic recovery package bill Tuesday, as Democrats held on to the few Republican supporters who helped hammer out a compromise measure last week.

The bill passed on a mostly party-line vote of 61-37. Sixty votes were needed. Three Republicans joined Democrats in passage.

Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., vowed to send a finished bill to Obama's desk "as soon as possible."

Obama, who was in Fort Myers, Fla., promoting his economic rescue efforts, welcomed the vote as "good news. ... It's a good start."

But the work has only just begun for congressional leaders in the House and Senate, who now must reconcile the differences between their two versions of the bill during what's known as a conference committee.

I downed about three Guinness drafts when I heard the news--it was either that or puke. Maybe I;ll drink about eight more and puke anyway.

The unholy alliance of Specter, Collins and Snowe crossed and voted for this abortion of a bill even though it appears Specter had not a clue what was in it.

I love Obama's line "it's a start". I guess he's not just happy destroying America, he wants to salt the land so all hope is gone.

This is liberal nirvana, we have a tax cheat setting policy that no one has any confidence in and appears as if will send us the rest of the way into oblivion and three RINO's sealed the deal. Great day for America, eh?

Change we can believe in indeed.

Specter, Snowe and Collins Whore Themselves Out

They plied the oldest profession by voting for this atrocious bill that will have dire consequences.

And it now goes to a vote tomorrow and eventual restructuring (read: adding back that which was removed) in committee:

WASHINGTON — Senate Democrats on Monday advanced the $838 billion economic stimulus bill, clearing a major procedural hurdle by a razor thin margin with the help of just three Republicans. A vote on final passage of the bill is expected on Tuesday.

The Senate vote, by 61 to 36, to close debate on the stimulus, symbolized the partisanship that still grips Congress despite President Obama’s call for new cooperation. It also highlighted the rising power of the centrist Republicans who cast the critical votes. Under Senate rules, it takes 60 votes to invoke cloture and usher a bill to a vote.

Those votes, by Senators Susan Collins and Olympia J. Snowe of Maine and Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, along with the 56 Democrats and two Independents who regularly vote with them, followed a succession of floor speeches by Republicans criticizing the stimulus as a bloated, wasteful spending bill.

Sens. Specter, Collins and Snowe should be so proud for their "bi-partisan" vote. It doesn't matter if it's the shittiest bill ever passed and one in which we will lay our future at the hands of China and the emirates, as long as you showed a spirit of cooperation that is so important to Democrats now that they are in power.

You all just were taken in by a dude who promised at the party that if you just fooled around with him, he wouldn't tell anyone and would still respect you in the morning. Guess what? He just posted every lurid detail on his Facebook page and everyone knows how you all whored yourselves out against the warnings of those who knew how it would end. You should feel cheap and used but of course, you won't.

I am on a personal mission to sink Specter at every opportunity. I live over the bridge from PA and will make it my sole goal to see him ousted from the Senate.

It's funny how a North Carolina Democrat has more intestinal fortitude and conservative leanings than these three (hopefully soon to be former) GOP Senators.

Sens. Specter, Collins and Snowe Will Sentence Us to $9.7-Trillion Hell

Thanks Senator's:

Feb. 9 (Bloomberg) -- The stimulus package the U.S. Congress is completing would raise the government’s commitment to solving the financial crisis to $9.7 trillion, enough to pay off more than 90 percent of the nation’s home mortgages.

The Federal Reserve, Treasury Department and Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation have lent or spent almost $3 trillion over the past two years and pledged to provide up to $5.7 trillion more if needed. The total already tapped has decreased about 1 percent since November, mostly because foreign central banks are using fewer dollars in currency-exchange agreements called swaps. The Senate is to vote early this week on a stimulus package totaling at least $780 billion that President Barack Obama says is needed to avert a deeper recession. That measure would need to be reconciled with an $819 billion plan the House approved last month.

Only the stimulus package to be approved this week, the $700 billion Troubled Asset Relief Program passed four months ago and $168 billion in tax cuts and rebates approved in 2008 have been voted on by lawmakers. The remaining $8 trillion in commitments are lending programs and guarantees, almost all under the authority of the Fed and the FDIC. The recipients’ names have not been disclosed.

“We’ve seen money go out the back door of this government unlike any time in the history of our country,” Senator Byron Dorgan, a North Dakota Democrat, said on the Senate floor Feb. 3. “Nobody knows what went out of the Federal Reserve Board, to whom and for what purpose. How much from the FDIC? How much from TARP? When? Why?”

When Byron Dorgan is asking questions, you know it's not good for anyone.

Read that again, 90% of mortgages could be paid off using the money these elected officials have blown but then they couldn't grease palms for the next election now could they?

Talk about a stimulus; give people actual money with the intent on paying down their mortgages--the largest debt anyone has and the largest chunk of money paid out monthly. If the American public could cut their debt in half, the banks would start lending again, money would flow from more free spending and tax coffers would grow in no time. But that would require fiscal sanity and we are well past that point.

Go ahead senators, vote for this and enjoy the fleeting huzzahs from the Democrats. Just know you've sentenced the rest of the nation and our children's children to a life of paying for it all. Maybe Obama will invite you to the White House and pat you behind the ears.

Specter Sells Out the GOP (Again) On Stimulus

A bill that won't really help his state in the long run has drawn Sen. Arlen Specter to the dark side--a place he seems comfortable--all in the name of "bipartisanship". Specter doesn't quite grasp that when all is said and done, you probably won't want your name remotely associated with this socialist spending agenda wrapped in stimulus clothing. But hey, Arlen, you'll be remembered for two things: the magic bullet theory and selling out your party in its most crucial moment. A legacy to be proud of I'm sure.

The Keystone State will get roughly the following (unless Specter was given a few extra billion and a nice rub behind the ears from Reid):

PENNSYLVANIA
Highways and Bridges: $1.3 billion
Mass Transit: $245.4 million
Wastewater Treatment and Sewers: $229.9 million
Heat Aid: $66.4 million
Schools Modernization: $821.8 million
Pell Grants: $878.8 million

That's not all that much and will not be as stimulative as Specter hopes. As I mentioned before, the state of NJ has allocated $2.3 billion in funding for schools this fiscal year. Jersey is much smaller than PA so this $3-billion+ package is not going to have the desired effect. Add to that the fat throughout and this is one big pile of steaming bullshit.

Specter and two other senators have said they would cross the aisle an vote for it, against their party's wishes and the wishes of their constituents. Specter has sentenced the children Lock Haven, Erie, Jim Thorpe, Chester, York, Shanksville and State College to a life of paying off this debt that will not help them long term or even in the short term. Congratulations Wiiliamsport, you and everyone else in the country who are jobless and suffering are helping to build a dog park for $555,000 in Chula Vista, CA and are allowing a struggling New York artist to create the next Jesus in urine "art" from money given the NEA. You must be so happy.

My guess is that the people of Pennsylvania who "cling to guns and religion" and even those so-called "racist's" out west in Murtha's district will take a few more looks at Senator Specter and decide whether or not he served their best interests. If he votes for this, he fails that test. The GOP was in the midst of resurgence and now that momentum is being pissed on by Specter, Collins and Snowe.
