According to the NY Post:
March 11, 2008 -- Gov. Eliot Spitzer has been soliciting high-priced hookers for at least six years and possibly for more than a decade, sources tell The Post. That would mean he was gettin' busy while he was Attorney General and busting pimps, pros and johns. The height of hypocrisy one might say but Democrats can't be hypocrites, only Republicans, right?
The revelation yesterday that the crusading governor was in fact "Client 9" named in a federal prostitution indictment did not shock insiders in the city's sex industry.
Sources tell The Post that Spitzer had frequented high-priced hookers as far back as 2002 and possibly earlier.
The Times broke the story but the Post and the Daily News are the ones that are going to dig up the real dirt, the dirt that will show just what a scumbag this dude really is. The only way to tamp it down even a little bit is by resigning tomorrow. The more he stays, the more he gets pummeled by the tabloids.
That said, I have a few questions:
So who would you say is benefitting from the saturation coverage of Spitzer? Try Obama with the Rezko trial happening as we speak.
I question the timing.
If the NY Governor and former AG was cavorting with prostitutes for the better part of the last five years, how did no reporters know about it? Why did The Times wait until yesterday to release it when they could have done what they've historically done when any other Democrat was found in a compromising situation--released it on a Friday or Saturday when the news cycle was slow?
Yes, the police were looking into the case and yes, they knew it was Spitzer but they don't seem willing to charge him as of yet and they haven't commented on the case at all. I don't think the government wanted this story to be revealed--at least not yet. That says to me that The Times may have weighed the effect of Rezko on Obama and the kinky exploits of a failing governor on the other. They chose to protect the man who could be the Dem presidential nominee and by featuring the story as explosively as they did, all eyes are off the Rezko trial.
Update: Can't you just hear Hillary seethe? She was hoping to pound home the Rezko connection and she was denied by this story.
update: An epic Iowahawk.
Update: I'm so proud, I'm now number five on a Google search for the search terms "republicans banging hookers". Sweet, I'm going to call my Mom and let her know that I've actually amounted to something.
Update: Damn, $80,000. That should put the out of work people in Buffalo and Newburgh in his corner.
