I've said several times before that Bush has most-definitely stepped up attacks against terrorist elements because he truly believes our efforts will be curtailed should Hillary or Obama win the Chief Executive position.
More proof courtesy of Cap'n Ed:
Seven missiles were fired in the strike in the tribal area of South Waziristan, the television report said. The Pakistani military said five or six explosions were heard near Wana, the main town in South Waziristan.Possibly ten people were killed in an adjacent house but it's yet to be said whether or not they were unfortunate collateral damage or part of the jihadi efforts.
Local tribesman Rahim Khan told The Associated Press missiles were fired by an unmanned drone. At least two hit and destroyed the home of a local militant leader and Taliban sympathizer who goes by the single name Noorullah, Khan said.
Only U.S.-led coalition forces are known to have unmanned drones operating in the region. Coalition forces based in neighboring Afghanistan have also launched attacks inside the Pakistani border in the past.
Khan said the house — a huge, fortress-like compound — was known as a hub for visiting foreign militants. Four of those killed were not locals, he said without elaborating, and seven other people were wounded in the attack. Taliban supporters immediately surrounded the area.
Bush has shown a lack of reluctance to act of late, which says to me that he knows it's time to step it up in our efforts to paralyze al-Qaeda for the near term. What happens after 1-20-09 is any ones guess.
It's an interesting irony that Bush's success in combating terror has had the effect of decreasing our collective vigilance. The efforts exerted by this administration have proven immensely effective in countering another attack. At the same time, the fact that we have not been attacked as have Britain and Spain shows just how much an effect we've had in curtailing operations. Keep in mind that W has done this in spite of the efforts of Senator Reid and Speaker Pelosi who have tried to torpedo efforts at every turn.
Believe me, I'm not saying we will not get hit again, I'm saying that we have not been hit in 6+ years and that--among other, less positive elements of Bush's terms--will be the President legacy.
Bush knows that we face a serious reckoning if efforts are diminished and seems to be taking action to eliminate as much of al-Qaeda's senior management structure as possible.
