Santa brought my 9-year old son a drum kit (this is about the closest to his kit I could find) for Christmas. A quality starter kit that can take the abuse a kid of his age can inflict. The look on his face when I showed him just how hard he can whack on them was enough to make a hard rock lovin' dad proud.
My better half and I listen to all types of music with him and my daughter so they get a great appreciation of different types of musicians. He and I were watching videos on Launch one night and I put on Rush-Closer to the Heart from Live in Rio. Anyone who has ever seen Neil Peart's kit would drool if they play drums and my boy was no exception.
Tonight we went to Barnes and Noble to use a gift certificate he received for his birthday and I asked if he'd like a book or CD. Of course he said CD and I said he could get whatever he wanted and he said "Rush, Dad". I have always been a big fan of the band from Fly By Night and even though I don't play an instrument, I've always admired how technically perfect they are. This, I thought to myself is a great moment. My boy is into not only good music, but good musicians.
I specifically asked him which Rush and he wanted the one with Closer to the Heart. It also has 2112 Overture, the lead song from the Ayn Rand inspired album 2112. He heard that and I think he gets it; this band is like no other.
