Karen Hughes does something no top Clinton aide would've done, face the picketers and talk to them in an intelligent manner:
Another woman in the audience asked, “As a pro-choice female, do you consider me a terrorist?”
“Absolutely not,” Hughes replied. “And I said nothing of the kind and did not make that comparison.”
“What I did say and what I believe is that September 11 was a reminder to all of us of the very precious nature of human life,” she added. “Surely, we can agree that we all ought to join together and work on ways to reduce the number of abortions in America, such as promoting adoption.”
Hughes left the White House in July of 2002 to spend more time with her family and to write her book. She plans to resume working full-time for President Bush in August, when she joins his campaign for re-election.
“I think she really handled the questions well,” said Kate Thomason, a junior at Agnes Scott. “I also agree with how she said we could all work together to reduce the number of abortions.”
Alexandra Acker, one of the protestors, said, “I was pleasantly surprised that she came over to talk to us. We wish that she had apologized for her outrageous comments.”
