And let's hope it leads to him being forced out quickly:
Sen. Ted Stevens, the longest-serving Republican in the U.S. Senate and one of the chamber's most powerful members, was indicted Tuesday in Washington for failing to disclose more than $250,000 worth of gifts that he received from businessmen who were seeking his help on federal issues and projects.Even if the seat were to go Dem, it couldn't be worse than Stevens who spent like a Democrat on a bender with a billion dollar gift card provided by the people of the US. Stevens used the Senate as his own personal power ATM where he could steer money and projects on a whim and get kick-backs for doing so.
While most voters outside Alaska aren't familiar with Stevens, the indictment is likely to hurt Stevens' chance at re-election and give Democrats a chance to take a seat in the U.S. Senate that has long been a Republican sinecure. Stevens was already facing a tough campaign ahead of Alaska's Aug. 26 Republican primary, and recent polling has shown the likely Democratic nominee, Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich, leading in the November race.
Good riddance Senator Stevens and thanks for giving the GOP another black eye we didn't exactly need in an election year. Take your "bridge to nowhere" and other pork-laden projects and go away--hopefully right to the nearest penitentiary.
As an aside, note how McClatchy tries to tie Stevens to McCain when it's well-known that McCain is a porkbuster of the highest magnitude. Sorry McClatchy, it's not gonna work.
In other Alaska news; Governor Sarah Palin--my selection for Veep--is currently polling at 80%.
