Friday Night Music--All Who Edition

Maximum R & B was how The Who were described and it was a fitting moniker. The late John Entwistle and Keith Moon (who died nearly thirty years ago) were the men who drove the beat while the very-much-alive Roger Daltrey and Pete Townsend provided the fierce guitars and vocals that made this band among the greatest ever.

The Who are about to commence their latest farewell tour and to be honest, Roger sounds as vibrant and powerful today as he ever has. Pete still beats the shit out of his Les Paul and the Who are still a formidable act.

First we have Who Are You. This is an interesting outtake from the studio and sounds great with Keith banging the hell out of the skins. This was Keith's last album (yes my younger readers, vinyl...ah, never mind) and he wailed:

Bonus: Keith playing with Zeppelin at The Forum in 1977. Poor audio quality but it does have an interesting drum solo.

Next we have The Seeker from a German TV program in 1970 with pictures of Paul Newman as Butch Cassidy. They asked the Beatles, Bobby Dylan and Timothy Leary but didn't get an answer:

Next we have Love Reign O'er Me from the epic Quadrophenia. If one could go back in time, I'd go to this show at the Cow Palace in San Francisco as part of the time trip. The sound quality is horrific but you get a feel for the electricity they generated:

Bonus: Pearl Jam doing a very good version (their first) in Copenhagen.

Finally, Behind Blue Eyes live with a hammered Keith introducing. Stay tuned after and hear Keith try to introduce Tommy as well. It's a chore for sure:

One last aside: John Entwistle was the single best bassist I've ever seen and heard save Geddy Lee. His fingers moved incredibly fast and his demeanor on stage was laid back, Jerry Garcia-style. So, in light of that, here's My Wife:
