The Sad Decline of Disney World

As I wrote before, I'm currently enjoying a vacation in Orlando. For the first four days, we spent our time in Universal Studios two parks. The bulk of the time was spent in Islands of Adventure that has an ass-kicking roller coaster named Dueling Dragons. The crowds were big but the wait wasn't excessive on any of the rides. The park was clean and the people friendly and more importantly, the price was reasonable.

Sadly, I can't say the same for Disney World.

Yesterday we went to the Magic Kingdom--the anchor of the Disney park system in Orlando. The park is exactly as you remember it, Fantasyland, Frontierland and Tomorrowland are the exact same and therein lies the problem. The park has literally not changed in decades and it's showing its age in many ways.

A couple of examples: Space Mountain broke down while we were in line and the Stitch show had "technical difficulties" as we were awaiting the beginning. They gave us "Fast Passes" for any ride to offset the time wasted but to have two rides go down within hours of each other shows that the park is suffering from serious neglect. It seems that they are concentrating on the other parks and allowing their flagship to sink.

I would recommend that they shut down entire sections of the park for extensive restoration and upgrades. Tomorrowland should be first beginning with Space Mountain and working from there. I wouldn't change Main St. USA or the castle as they look great, but the other areas are rundown looking and I see alot more trash around the park than I used to. To top it all off, the prices are exorbitant. Now I'm a Capitalist in the highest sense and I don't begrudge anyone making as much as they can from a product but when that product is deteriorating at a rapid clip, they are charging you for something they are not quite delivering. That I have a problem with.

I for one would choose not to step foot in Disney again the next time I'm down here and would spend more time in Universal as it was a much more enjoyable experience. From ease of parking and access to cleanliness, Universal whipped Disney. Perhaps Disney management ought to go into the park incognito and get a good look at what is happening to the Magic Kingdom.

What about the TRASH? I'm on my way out of Disney World now and was there in October and August as well. Yes, I have, historically, been addicted. But these days, I am shocked to the point of wondering about Universal, at the trash that is piling up all over the parks. Waited in line forever for the new Spaceship Earth, got to the front, and there was trash all over the entrance by a trash can that was overflowing. I noticed the same at Kali River Rapids and Expedition Everest in Animal Kingdom. We took friends on these rides, bragging about how beautiful the landscaping was in the line but no - everything was covered in cups, straws, crap from the cups, french fies and wrappers and napkins...well, trash.

Adios quality control. And adios me.
