An Inconvenient Threat

Michael Goodwin has a good piece today discussing the Dems reluctance to address the central issue in this election--the War on Terror. He notes that it was not even brought up in Las Vegas and none of the questioners or candidates seemed to think it relevant enough a topic.

The simple fact is that we will be in Iraq come January 2009, we will still be Afghanistan come that date and we will still targeted by Islamic radicals. The Democrats have become so afraid of the kook lefty fringe led by websites such as Daily Kos and Fire Dog Lake that they don't even reference that we are at in a war that will have far-reaching consequences. They fail to recognize that should we be attacked again--and next time it won't be symbolic, it will be aimed at the heart of our economy--abortion, poverty and all the other issues that the Dems hold dear will mean nothing.

Let's suppose that a Democrat does in fact win next November, let's further suppose that we are attacked early in that Presidents term, the result will be that American's will reject Democrats for decades. We all saw what happened when Carter took a half-hearted approach at rescuing our citizens from Iran and the subsequent release as Reagan was inaugurated. The Dems didn't get the White House back for twelve years. In other words, it's in the best interest of the nation and the Democrat Party to address the national defense and war issues.

If the Democrats truly support the troops as they say so often, why did they not acknowledge that we are making great strides in Anbar Province and Baghdad, two areas that were difficult to operate in pre-surge? Because it would have been a hat tip to Bush and that runs counter to every thought they have.

The two issues that concern American are two issues that the Democrats are incredibly weak on: national defense and illegal immigration. They have a nasty habit of ignoring both as they know that to address them hurts them with the nutroots base they are trying to cultivate. The other side of that is that the nutroots are a vocal yet small minority and by playing to them, they risk the loss of all credibility in the general election.

The public is starting to get the word that yes, we are in fact winning this war. Don't hold your breath waiting for the Dems to mention it or for the MSM to ask them about it.
