Small Plane Crashes Into Building in NYC

Sphere: Related Content

A small plane (or helicopter) crashed into an apartment building on the Upper East Side. It's breaking now. Ace and Allah are all over it.

Terrorism is not suspected as of now.

Update: According to NBC, 180 apartments are in the building and the fire is at least four alarm.

Update: Live coverage here.

Update: Supposedly the yahoo was doing aerial tricks.

Update: The Dow crashed on the news.

Update: Here's an AP piece that has this:

Christine Monaco, a New York spokeswoman for FBI, said there was indication of terrorism in the crash, but that officials "have been sent to the scene as a routine." FAA spokesman Jim Peters said all three New York City-area airports are operating normally.

I believe that should have read "there was no indication of terrorism".

Update: CNN is reporting that NORAD scrambled fighter jets at 1515 (3:15 PM EST). ABC has just confirmed that.

Update: I was right across from Manhattan this morning and it was very cloudy and foggy. It's raining here in south Jersey and it may have started in Manhattan.

Update: Plane owned by former Phillie and current Yankee pitcher Corey Lidle. No word if Lidle was in the plane.

Update: It appears Lidle was on the plane. Sad if true.

Update: The local news has footage from 2006 spring training. Lidle took a local reporter up just after getting his license and she said he appeared to be a good pilot. He did in fact own the plane according to the FAA.

Update: Lidle's passport was found at the scene and he was supposedly the thepilot and only ne aboard.

Update: Apparently the plane can come equipped with a whole-plane parachute. Why it was not used is not known. Also, it is now being reported that only 2 are dead.
