Waking Up or Remaining Blissfully Ignorant

Last week, two momentous events occurred; Joe Lieberman was ousted from the Democratic party by Ned Lamont--an anti-war candidate with socialist bloodlines and a pack of bloggers pumping him up.

Two days later, investigators in London arrested 20 Muslim men who were planning to take down 10 airplanes using a new method. Those men were brought to the attention of British intelligence by one brave soul and the investigation eventually expanded to the point where the Brits had a man on the inside. The US and Pakistan provided maor assistance, infact most of the assistance that America provided was through investigative techniques that those on the political left who support men such as Lamont have castigated.

The political left was in high spirits after Lamont's win and when the news broke of the foiled terror plot, they held their hands up to their ears and refused to acknowledge that this is in fact a real event. Kind of like three-year olds.

Well my little socialist friends, this is very real. You call yourself the "reality-based community" , well I've got some reality for you. Those who wish to do us harm do not care if you push through universal healthcare or school reform. They don't care if you preserve abortion on demand or some other "progressive" platform. They want only to kill you. They don't care if you backed them in Lebanon or Iraq (or some other form of dhimmitude), they want only to see you and me dead. Period.

These are very serious people who chose to extinguish the life of their own child to murder as many infidels as possible. Do you think you can reason with people like that? Do you think that a man like Ned Lamont can sit down and reason with people who would sacrifice their child to support an operation that is nothing more than murder?

As for those who choose to question the timing of the investigation and arrests, I have no words for you because you are no longer an American first, you are a hyphenated American, something along the lines of Progressive-American. Sad really, but typical. The long-term view means nothing, only November and your hopeful return to some type of power matters. It makes no difference how those men act when they get there, as long as they get there.

The left has now set a litmus test for winning. You must not only be pro-abortion, you must be anti-war, anti-Israel and always vote that way. You have spoken and the country hears your words. They are coming through loud and clear. One can only hope that the majority of our fellow citizens see through the rhetoric and turn their sights to the future. A future in which we are in a war we've never prepared for against an enemy that is not only backed by a coalition of nation-states, but by an ideology that makes nazism or communism look pale by comparison.

Michael Barone nails it:

Can we expect as much of our Left? It seems doubtful. Our Left criticized George W. Bush when The New York Times revealed that the National Security Agency was surveilling telephone calls from al-Qaida suspects overseas to the United States. Now it appears that the United States surveilled the British terrorists, and that they made phone calls to the United States. The Left cried foul when The New York Times revealed that the United States was monitoring money transfers at the SWIFT bank clearinghouse in Brussels. Now it appears that there was monitoring of money transfers by the British terrorists in Pakistan. On Tuesday, the Left was gleeful that it was scoring political points against George W. Bush. On Thursday, it seemed that the supposedly controversial NSA surveillance contributed to savings thousands of lives.

Joseph Lieberman is being criticized for saying, "I'm worried that too many people, both in politics and out, don't appreciate the seriousness of the threat to American security and the evil of the enemy that faces us -- more evil, or as evil, as Nazism and probably more dangerous than the Soviet communists we fought during the long Cold War. We cannot deceive ourselves that we live in safety today and the war is over, and it's why we have to stay strong and vigilant."

See also Charles Krauthammer:

Lamont seems to think that we should just sit down with the Iranians and show them why going nuclear is not a good idea. This recalls Sen. William Borah's immortal reaction in September 1939 upon hearing that Hitler had invaded Poland to start World War II: "Lord, if I could only have talked with Hitler, all this might have been avoided."

This naivete in the service of endless accommodationism recalls also the flaccid foreign policy of the post-Vietnam Democratic left. It lost the day -- it lost the country -- to Ronald Reagan and a muscular foreign policy that in the end won the Cold War.

Vietnam cost the Democrats 40 years in the foreign policy wilderness. Anti-Iraq sentiment gave the antiwar Democrats a good night on Tuesday, and may yet give them a good year or two. But beyond that, it will be desolation.

Update: It's very, very real.
