When Extremism Becomes the Norm

Crooks and Liars has video of Jack Cafferty espousing his view that Arlen Specter is the only one standing between Bush becoming a "dictator". He's referring of course to the USA Today piece that talked of the secret program of government "data mining" phone calls of citizens. They did not listen to the conversations, they just used the info to determine what calls went where and from where they originated. Here's the quote:

Cafferty: We all hope nothing happens to Arlen Specter, the Republican head of the Senate Judiciary Committee, cause he might be all that stands between us and a full blown dictatorship in this country. He's vowed to question these phone company executives about volunteering to provide the government with my telephone records, and yours, and tens of millions of other Americans.

Cafferty actually says that we are on the verge of a "dictatorship in this country". OK Jack.

The left in this country (I will cease calling them the far-left because the left is all far left nowadays) is like Pavlov's dogs, you mention Bush and dictator in the same sentence and all the lefty blogs rush to post it like little lemmings without even thinking about what they are writing.
They evidently wouldn't know a dictator if one tortured them and threw them into a gulag in Siberia.

I would dare them to give one example of the US heading toward a dictatorship. It certainly isn't this issue because the entire USA Today piece is a rehash of a 2005 NY Times piece that was no big deal.

The Donks smell blood and they are in a frenzy. Every day something new comes out, they breathlessly post how it's one more step to dictatorship. High gas prices=dictatorship, eavesdropping on suspected terrorists=dictatorship, data mining=dictatorship. It gets tedious.

Get ahold of yourselves, comrades. Chavez and Fidel Castro are dictators. George Bush is a president who has implemented plans to protect the nation and has done it within the confines of the law and most definitely has briefed senior members of congress in.

I guess the lefty bloggers are a bit upset because they think the government knows about all the late night 900 number calls they've made to the sex lines or something.

Update: Once again, the Donks play the part of Wile E. Coyote and have something blow up in their faces:

A majority of Americans initially support a controversial National Security Agency program to collect information on telephone calls made in the United States in an effort to identify and investigate potential terrorist threats, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll.

The new survey found that 63 percent of Americans said they found the NSA program to be an acceptable way to investigate terrorism, including 44 percent who strongly endorsed the effort. Another 35 percent said the program was unacceptable, which included 24 percent who strongly objected to it.

Also of interest is Question 43 which asks:

43. As it conducts the war on terrorism, do you think the United States government is or is not doing enough to protect the rights of American citizens?

It's amazing that less than 1% believe that the government has done too much in protecting the nation. That says to me that people have not forgotten about 9/11 and know full well that we must remain vigilant.
