The USA Today features a cover story about Barry Bonds' pursuit of Babe Ruth's home run record from the racial angle:
Is Bonds, seven home runs from surpassing Babe Ruth for second on baseball's all-time home runs list, the latest African-American athlete to suffer the effects of racism, similar to the experience of all-time leader Hank Aaron?
Or is the anger directed toward Bonds a product of mounting evidence he used performance-enhancing drugs to reach this point in history?
Give me a friggin' break. The reason that people don't want Bonds to surpass Ruth or Aaaron is simple--he cheated. There's no racial angle here, just the angle of a player who has treated fans and fellow players alike like garbage. He has shown no respect for the game. It's no different than Mark McGwire's tainted HR season or Ken Caminitti's MVP year. In my mind, they cheated and those records should be erased.
Get off the racial angle and focus on the real issue; a stronger steroid policy would instill the respect and trust back the game that was lost when these idiots injected an enhancement substance into their bodies.
Love the headline USA Today, nothing like inserting prejudice where it doesn't exist.
This doubly pisses me off as we should be celebrating other things in baseball such as Jimmy Rollins' pursuit of the all time consecutive hit streak over two seasons.
