Travel from San Diego as well as other issues have dragged on my time. I fully intended to have beers with this guy in L.A. but a demanding client made that an impossibility. Perhaps next time, Kip.
Anyway, I'm not a big gambler but did place a few (for fun, wink wink) wagers on yesterdays games and won on both. A few thoughts:
Ben Roethlisberger is a great quarterback. He reads defenses well--a great line helps, and chooses whatever receiver is open. He completed passes to seven different receivers and ran when he had to. Say what you will about Bettis--I like the guy--he is a a great asset in the fourth quarter with the lead. Apart from maybe Mike Alstott, Bettis is the best rusher in the league inside the five.
The Steelers D is awesome with Polamalu an absolute force in the backfield. I haven't seen a guy change a game like him since the original "LT".
In the NFC, I was a little less sure of this game going in, but picked the 'Hawks because they had their starting running back--MVP Shawn Alexander. Carolina was going with their third string and ended the game with some guy they picked out of the stands.
Hasselback is a good young QB, although the constant comparison to Favre is a bit irritating. He is also smart and, like Big Ben, doesn't home in on one receiver. He hit 8 different targets and distributed the ball to all fields nicely.
It's too early for a pick as the stupid two week rule is in effect so there's time. I'll make a selection next week.
