Eleanor Clift: stuck in the DC cocoon:
Through most of the four days of hearings, Alito sat impassively while Democrats fell into the worst caricature of bloviating senators. There is no danger whatsoever when it comes to the nomineeÂ?s confirmation. He'll get more Democrats voting against him than Roberts, who had half the 44-member Democratic caucus voting for him, including the ranking Democrat on the Judiciary committee, Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy. One Hill vote-counter predicted the number of no votes on the Democratic side would be in the high 30s, no nail-biter but a sign of stormy weather ahead for the Republicans if Alito becomes the deciding vote against Roe v. Wade.
Clift believes that there are many closeted pro-choicers in the Republican and if Roe is overturned they will bolt the party. It's highly unlikely that Roe will be overturned regardless of Alito's confirmation. The portions of the abortion law that mainstream America hates; partial-birth abortion, requirements of minors to inform their parents and spousal notification may be changed, but the abortion will remain legal as too many older American women remember the pre-Roe days ofbotchedd abortions. In fact, I was discussing this with my Mom who is a hard core Republican and she doesn't want to see Roe overturned for just that reason.
On the things you don't read everyday front, the co-founder of Greenpeace, a man who quit the organization because of their "extremism", has some interesting words in Hawaii:
Global warming and nuclear energy are good and the way to save forests is to use more wood.
That was the message delivered to a biotechnology industry gathering yesterday in Waikiki.
However, it wasn't the message that was unconventional, but the messenger Â? Greenpeace co-founder Patrick Moore.
Moore is an outcast to the environmentalists--much like Zell Miller and Joe Lieberman are to the Donks. The "greens" hung on this guys every word and spread the word of Greenpeace far and wide prior to his leaving. Now they're a bitter bunch of patchouli smelling, Birkenstock-clad, hemp clothing wearing ex-hippies:
"He's obviously thought about things," Curtis said. "But I don't buy a lot of his arguments.
Of course you don't, to do so would mean that everything you believe is wrong and you, Mr. Curtis, don't have the courage to do so.
