The riots continue in the suburbs of Paris. No Pasaran has this story in great detail:
4 cars were torched in the rue Dupuis, near Place de la République, in a neighborhood were street lighting has been out of order for several days. Towards 9PM the rue Béranger (near the rue Dupuis) was closed off after residents reported gunfire from the rooftops. Once police left the area youths were seen torching vehicles causing an explosion which spread fire to the stairway of a building. Sunday morning, the police have issued a warning to neighborhood merchants to be careful (ie. you are on your own, people!).
Still no word from President of Ripoublika Franska, Jack Chiraq.
Gives a new meaning to term City of Lights, don't you think?
Tim Blair has thoughts on the French reaction to Katrina and there response to this fiasco.
The Boston Globe has a nice, touchy-feely take on the root causes of the newest intifada. The usual from the Globe.
Update: The intifada now spreads across the country and into Paris:
The violence - originally concentrated in neighborhoods northeast of Paris with large populations of Arab and African Muslim immigrants - has now spread across France, extending west to the rolling fields of Normandy and south to resort cities on the Mediterranean.
The Normandy town of Evreux, 60 miles west of Paris, appeared to suffer the worst damage Saturday. Arsonists burned at least 50 vehicles, part of a shopping center, a post office and two schools, said Patrick Hamon, spokesman for the national police. Five police officers and three firefighters were injured battling the Evreux blazes, Hamon said.
Attacks were also reported in Cannes and Nice.
Note the two pictures of the burned out McDonald's. I guess it's all America's fault for our oppressive, capitalistic ways...or not. We should have become more socialist when we had the chance, it seems to be working pretty well.
