Break-up the Phillies

Sphere: Related Content

As I alluded to last week, the Phillies are on a tear. 9-1 on this homestand and coming off a major trade. 1-1/2 back from the Nationals was inconceivable a month ago.

As for the trade, I'm happy with it, although losing a quality guy like Placido Polanco hurts. This guy would play wherever he was asked, outfield, second base, SS and third. He never bitched or moaned like some of the prima donna's do today. Charlie Manuel just couldn't get rid of the often hurt David Bell and couldn't afford to sit rising star Chase Utley.

Ugueth Urbina got a rude welcome after getting shelled in the set-up role last night but should solidify the bullpen:

The Rangers hit Ugueth Urbina, who made his Phillies debut. He stepped onto the mound in the top of the ninth inning with a six-run lead and cheers from the 25,205 fans.

He left a short time later to a smattering of boos and the outcome in question. He allowed a two-run homer to former Penn standout Mark DeRosa and put two more runners on before Wagner had to quickly get ready - he threw just six warm-up pitches - and ended the game.

"It's in the past," Urbina said. "I don't remember it. It was like my welcome to the National League."

I'm going to the yard tonight to see them whack the Brewers.
