The Scariest Words Democrats Have Ever Heard
President Bush--who by all accounts was very relaxed today--said this at today's press conference:
And it's one of the wonderful -- it's like earning capital. You asked, do I feel free. Let me put it to you this way: I earned capital in the campaign, political capital, and now I intend to spend it.
Damn right. Start with Social Security, then onto eviscerating the tax code, all the while smacking the hell out of the insurgent element in Fallujah. Bush now has a mandate, he's the first incumbent chief executive in many moons to win and pick up seats in both houses, he's also the first president to be elected with a majority since his pop in 1988. He has a a mainly friendly congress to work with (excluding Specter and other liberal Republicans) and two years to get significant legislation passed. He won by almost four million votes, and received the most votes of any president ever. That my friends is a mandate.
How will the donkeys counter the conservative shift in America? My guess is more of the same. They will blame Kerry for running a bad campaign saying things such as "why didn't you reply to the Swiftboat Veterans For Truth sooner?" or other stupid nonsense. It's true that Kerry made mistakes and that people just plain didn't like or trust him. That is not the problem, the problem is they dislike the ideology he stands for. With Hillary waiting in the wings for 2008, I don't see much of a change. Right now they are apoplectic with regard to this election and will remain so for a few months. Maybe, just maybe, they will take a hard look at their party and the heavy leftward slant they've taken and become a true opposition party. I highly doubt it until they suffer one more ass-kickings like they suffered in 2002 and Tuesday and they have a true Scoop Jackson-type candidate that can rally the base and pick off liberal Republicans.
