Gov. Jim McGreevey would be the most corrupt Governor in the country if it weren't for Gray Davis:
Within months after taking office, the McGreevey administration intervened to block contracts for 14 lucrative billboards that had been awarded to rivals of a firm with close ties to the governor's advisers.
The governor's office moved last June against two companies that were trying to develop billboards worth millions of dollars along the approaches to the Walt Whitman Bridge.
In a strongly worded letter, the governor's office demanded that the Delaware River Port Authority revoke the licenses it had awarded to Interstate Outdoor and Stanton & Associates.
Interstate is owned by Drew Katz, the son of Lewis Katz, the politically connected managing owner of the New Jersey Nets.
Interstate's rival, Matt Outdoor, had unsuccessfully sought development rights to many sites in the same vicinity.
Matt Outdoor has strong political ties, too. Gary B. Taffet, the governor's former chief of staff, and Paul A. Levinsohn, his former chief counsel, had worked on billboard ventures with Matt Outdoor in 2000 and 2001. They resigned their government posts early this year.
This is pretty much a weekly occurence in the state known for high car insurance and Superfund (site in PDF) sites. Still McGreedy gets some spotlight.
